About Palm Oil

Palm oil is a form of edible vegetable oil obtained from the fruit of the African oil palm tree.

The increased demand for palm oil, is fuelling the destruction of rainforests. The UN ranks the palm oil industry as the leading cause of rainforest destruction in Malaysia and Indonesia. That is pushing the Orangutan closer to extinction.

Indonesia converts 3,400km3 (340,000ha) of forest into oil palm annually – that’s 54 rugby fields every hour.  In the last 10 years, almost 80% of deforestation in Sumarta’s peat swamp forests (vital carbon stores and key Orangutan habitat) was driven by expanding oil palm production. The ongoing destruction of the Orangutan’s natural habitat is threatening the survival of Orangutans. Estimates put Sumatran Orangutans population at less than 6,600 animals. If current trends continue Auckland Zoo estimates are that this great ape could be extinct as early as 2022!
